Part 2: He didn’t move.
“What do you mean? ” he asked a weak question.
“He left. It’s been a while. I don’t know where she is now. ”
Quiet.
The silence has taken a long time.
Until she laughed softly—not happy, but full of pain.
“I thought she was just mad at her husband… ” he whispered. “So he left his children behind too… ”
I didn’t get any answers.
Because that’s what I’m thinking too.
Aling Lourdes stayed for the following days.
Not to blame me.
Except to find the answer.
He called Mark’s friends, former co-workers, relatives. But all have the same answer:
No one knows where she is.
Looks like he’s disappeared.
Until one night, while I was serving dinner, her cellphone rang.
Unknown number.
He put it on speakerphone.
A man’s voice is what we have heard:
“Ma…”
My whole body stiffened.
That’s Mark.
“Where are you?” ” quick question of Aling Lourdes.
Quiet on the other line.
Then, he said it softly:
“I’m sorry. ”
Just three words.
But it’s enough for everything to fall apart.
It was a long conversation, but he didn’t say where she was.
He said he needed to “find himself,” because he felt he failed as a husband and father.
Aling Lourdes didn’t agree.
“Do you know what you left behind?” ” he was crying out loud. “Those are your children! ”
Mark is quiet.
Up to what he said:
“I want to go back. ”
The days full of waiting have passed.
Aling Lourdes is no longer angry with me. She helps me take care of the kids even more.
He said:
“Whether he returns or not, the children’s family can’t be lost.” ”
Until a cloudy afternoon, the door is open.
Part 3-End Story:Mark.
Skinny. Tired. And yet he is.
The kids ran and hugged him.
“Daddy! ”
It seems like all the emotions that were long gone have returned.
Aling Lourdes is just standing in the corner.
Didn’t come close immediately.
Stared at her for a while.
Then he said :
“Come on in. ”
A simple word.
But it feels like a new beginning.
There is no grand comeback.
No big promises.
Just little by little.
A chair at the table.
A pick up from school.
One morning she doesn’t disappear.
Everything isn’t perfect anymore.
But it’s true.
One night, while the children were asleep, Aling Lourdes sat beside me.
He said it softly:
“Man, sometimes gets lost. But what’s important is knowing how to come back. ”
I didn’t answer.
Just checked out the light in the living room.
It’s hot.
Imperfect.
But whole.
And that’s when I realized:
Family is not about not being broken.
But about choosing to fix it even if it breaks repeatedly.
